My phone buzzes and adrenaline spikes when I see the phone number.

“Hello, Chrissy. This is Sharlene from King Technical Ventures. Do you have a minute?”

“Of course, Sharlene.” I quietly go to my door and lock it, then triple-check that it’s locked. I can’t have anyone walking in right now. “What can I do for you? Do you have more questions for me?”

“Actually,” she chuckles, “I don’t have any further questions. I’ll get straight to the point. Everyone loved you. You’re bright and intelligent, and Cindy Orangefield would love for you to join her team. Take time to consider our offer, but…”

“I accept!” I could just jump out of my skin with how excited I am. “Thank you so much!”

“That’s wonderful news, Chrissy. Cindy will be pleased to hear about your enthusiasm. When are you available to start?”

“I can start in three weeks.” On the spur of the moment, I decide to give myself the best birthday gift and take a short vacation before starting my new job.

“That’s perfect, Chrissy. We’re thrilled to be adding you to our team. I’ll email you the contract and all the paperwork, so you can get a headstart on reading through those. Contact me with any questions.”

I end the call and pump my arm in the air. I did it! I got a job as a full Project Manager! I can’t wait to tell Frances!

But what about Dallas? I’m not sure exactly why, but accepting this new job feels like a betrayal to him. Sure, there’s lust between us, but does that mean I have to keep this job? If I leave this job, will…whatever this is between us continue? There’s something fiery when we’re together, but I don’t understand what it is. When we’re together, it feels like he sees me in a way that men usually don’t see me. He treats me like I’m sexy and desirable, not just the fat friend to be polite to.

I press my hands flat on my desk and breathe deeply, trying to calm my heart rate.

I don’t know what to do with Dallas.
